Webinar: Hydrocarbon Forensics Part III: Differentiating Between Biogenic and Petrogenic Hydrocarbons

Speaker:Virgil Guran, M.A.Sc., C.Chem., Consulting Scientist, Environmental Services

Identification and characterization of petroleum hydrocarbons assumes limited to no interference from other chemical species that may be extracted and quantified. Often times, when faced with samples collected from high organic content in environmental media, significant interference from polar biogenic compounds leads to difficulty in determining exceedance of applicable standards or interpretation of qualitative data.

This session will:

  • Summarize approaches to interpreting biogenic interferences on routine CCME hydrocarbon results;
  • Review testing options available for characterizing biogenic toluene and biogenic interferences of the F2-F4 range hydrocarbons;
  • Provide an overview of the newly recognized Biogenic Interference Calculation (BIC) method;
  • Describe novel analytical methods for (1) identifying biogenic biomarkers and (2) fractionating and quantifying separately biogenics and petrogenic hydrocarbons; and
  • Review the application of stable isotope analysis as a line of evidence and confirmatory tool.

This webinar will be an interactive session and a recording will be made available to attendees for future training purposes.
